Broncos captain Adam Reynolds faces uncertain future after 2025

Broncos NRL star Adam Reynolds

Adam Reynolds has become the latest NRL star caught in a salary cap squeeze, with the Brisbane Broncos captain admitting he may be forced out of the club at season’s end despite his desire to play on.

The 34-year-old halfback opened up about his future in an emotional interview on Sunday, revealing he wants to continue playing in 2026 but may need to explore options away from Red Hill.

Reynolds, who joined Brisbane in 2022 after a long stint at South Sydney, has become a fan favourite in Queensland, but his $550,000-a-year salary and ongoing injury troubles have made him a likely casualty of the club’s looming cap crunch.

“Ideally, I’d love to stay at the Broncos, but it’s pretty tight there at the moment,” Reynolds told Triple M.

“If things work out, great. If not, you’d have to look and explore what else is out there.”

Brisbane’s books are under increasing pressure following the club’s $4.4 million contract extension for star fullback Reece Walsh, which begins in 2026.

With fellow big names Payne Haas, Kotoni Staggs, and Selwyn Cobbo all off contract at the end of this year, Reynolds appears to be on the outside looking in as the Broncos prioritise long-term deals for their younger core.

The contract problems couldn’t come at a worse time for Brisbane. They’re second on the NRL ladder and looking like a real problem, with top NRL bookmakers pricing them at $4.50 to win this year’s premiership.

It’s a bitter twist for the playmaker, whose family only recently settled in Brisbane after leaving Sydney behind.

“We feel very happy with the call we made,” Reynolds said in a recent interview.

“The kids absolutely love it here. They don’t want to go back to Sydney. They call Brisbane home now, and so do we.”

The veteran’s experience and leadership remain in demand, with Super League outfit Hull KR reportedly circling.

Several NRL clubs could also be interested, especially given the ongoing scarcity of experienced halves in the competition.

For now, Reynolds is focused on recovering from a hamstring strain sustained while goal-kicking during Brisbane’s 46-24 win over the Tigers in Round 5.

The Broncos are hoping he’ll be fit for Friday’s clash against the Roosters at Suncorp Stadium, where the Broncos are $1.31 with BetOnline to improve their record to 5-1.
