Broadside delivers at Rosehill

The momentum built during the spring carnival has continued in Sydney for Tulloch Lodge, with Broadside an impressive winner of the Listed ATC Cup at Rosehill.

The partnership of Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott claimed the training honours over Melbourne Cup week, highlighted by Pinot’s win in the VRC Oaks.

Waterhouse was to the fore on Saturday, welcoming Sedanzar back to the winner’s stall before Broadside took the honours in the 2000m ATC Cup.

Ridden by Tim Clark, Broadside ($6.50) travelled midfield with stablemate Fabrizio ($9.50) taking up the role of leader with another stablemate, the $2.10 favourite Savapinski, tracking him.

But it was Broadside who had the dash at the end, posting two lengths on the fast-finishing Lord Kingsley ($18), with Montauk ($17) another 2-1/4 lengths third and Savapinski fourth.

It was five-year-old Broadside’s first start since he won the Newcastle Cup (2300m) two months ago but he had shown his fitness with a barrier trial win last month.

“He’s never been out of work so he was fit enough,” Waterhouse said.

“There are a lot of nice Cups for him coming up over the summer so we’ll look at those.

“He’s a very honest horse and it was a good win.”

Waterhouse said Savapinski, whose win in the Group Two Matriarch Stakes at Flemington helped seal the stable’s place at the top of the table in Melbourne, was likely to go for a spell along with Fabrizio.

“We will probably give Savapinski a break and get her ready for the autumn,” she said.

“I haven’t spoken to (owner) George Altomonte but I will be recommending he also has a spell.”
