Round 19 preview: Lions v Swans
The Brisbane Lions will be out to consolidate their top-four berth when they host the ladder-leading Sydney at the Gabba on Sunday.
Brisbane are narrowly the bookies’ elect for this contest, priced at $1.86 to defeat the top-placed Swans ($1.96). The line has been set at a slender 1.5.
After a slow start to the season, the Lions have rediscovered their form and have stormed into premiership contention and are now third favourite to win the AFL Premiership.
The Lions’ resurgence can be attributed to an improvement in some key statistics.
They lead the competition in kicks, marks and inside 50s, while they sit third for clearances and fourth for goals. This combination makes them hard to beat and they enter this contest as slight betting favourites due in part to their excellent record at home.
Brisbane will be without elite small forward Charlie Cameron after he ran afoul of the judiciary, but defenders Brandon Starcevich and Noah Answerth should be available for selection after recovering from injuries. Jaxon Prior and Deven Robertson might promoted if coach Chris Fagan makes any changes.
Although they remain the clear top team, the Swans have appeared a little shaky in recent weeks. They were beaten by the Dockers in round 16 and the Saints in round 17, while they were fortunate to draw an easy assignment in round 18 when they accounted for the Kangaroos.
Sydney are still the league’s highest-scoring side but languish mid-pack when it comes to clearances and tackles. They also move the ball largely by foot, and intercept marks either way might prove the difference in this contest.
Sydney welcome back midfield linchpin Isaac Heeney after his suspension. Luke Parker might be the unfortunate selection casualty as coach John Longmire tries to fit all his stars into the Swan’s lineup. Justin McInerney will miss with a knee injury and defender Harry Cunningham will face a midweek fitness test.

Brisbane v Sydney betting tips & strategy
This clash promises to give us a glimpse of a potential September showdown. Betting markets have the match set at near coin-flip odds, but Brisbane make slightly more appeal on home soil. The Lions should cover the 1.5-point line to return $1.92 on Unibet.
Fans of the Swans and Lions will be hoping to witness a high-scoring shootout, with both squads packing considerable attacking options. With this in mind, taking over 176.5 total points at $1.90 looks like the obvious play.
The absence of Cameron will open scoring opportunities for other Lions players, and Will Ashcroft might put his hand up. The talented young midfielder can do it all and found the scoreboard with one major in the round 18 win over the Eagles. Ashcroft as an anytime goalkicker is the tip at $2.65 on Neds.
