Round 24 AFL preview: Brisbane v Essendon

The Brisbane Lions will be looking to lock in at least a home final this Saturday night as they host Essendon at the Gabba in round 24 of the AFL.

Last Saturday, the Lions suffered a heartbreaking defeat, losing to Collingwood by one point at the MCG. After leading for nearly the whole game, Brisbane conceded three late goals and now look unlikely to secure a top-four finish.

After winning nine straight matches to push into the premiership picture, Chris Fagan’s men have lost two matches in a row to slide down to fifth on the AFL ladder. However, as they face the Bombers at home, they are very heavy favourites at $1.13 with BoomBet.

Brisbane midfielder Jarrod Berry is in doubt after being subbed out with hamstring tightness against the Magpies. But in more positive news, key defender Jack Payne is in the mix to return from a foot injury.

Essendon suffered a season-ending defeat last Friday night, going down to the Sydney Swans by 39 points at Marvel Stadium. Although they held a seven-point lead at half-time, the Bombers were poor in the second half, conceding 12 goals to just four.

Winning just one of their last six matches, this season has quickly fallen apart for Brad Scott’s side. With nothing to play for, it is no surprise to see the Bombers as rank outsiders for this clash at $6.25 with PlayUp.

There are no forced changes for Essendon this week, although Jordan Ridley, Matt Guelfi and Nik Cox are all tests to return.

Brisbane v Essendon R24 predictions

With a home final on the line, expect a dominant display from the Lions. They have won four of the last five clashes between the sides and should have far too much quality across the park. Back them to win by 40 or more points at $2.10 with top AFL betting sites.

Sitting fifth in the Coleman Medal race, Brisbane key forward Joe Daniher is having an excellent season in front of goal. The 30-year-old has kicked multiple goals in 12 of his last 13 matches, and last time he faced the Bombers, he kicked six. Against his former side, back Daniher to kick three or more goals at $2.20 with leading Australian bookies.

Essendon midfielder Jye Caldwell has taken his game to another level in the past two months. The former Giant has collected over 30 touches on four occasions in his past eight outings, including a 31-disposal effort against the Swans last Friday. At $3.60 with top online bookmakers, Caldwell offers excellent value to reach that mark once again.
