AFL Round 6: Brisbane vs Collingwood match preview
Brisbane and Collingwood kick off Round 6 of the 2025 AFL Premiership season with a top-four clash at the Gabba this Thursday night.
In a replay of the 2023 AFL Grand Final, the Lions are clear favourites at $1.50 with leading online bookmakers. The Magpies offer some value at $2.70, with the line set at 13.5 points.
Last Saturday, the Lions continued their unbeaten start to the season with a stunning 21-point win over the Western Bulldogs. Trailing by 39 points early in the third term, Chris Fagan’s side scored 14 second-half majors to secure the comeback win. Midfielder Hugh McCluggage led the way with 32 disposals, while key forward Eric Hipwood kicked five goals — all in the second half.
Now 5-0, the Lions stand alone at the top of the AFL ladder. However, their slow starts are concerning, as they have had to overcome at least a four-goal deficit in six of their last eight games.
Collingwood were also successful in Gather Round, beating the Sydney Swans by 31 points last Friday night. In a high-scoring affair, the Pies won every quarter, despite having fewer disposals and inside 50s. Star midfielder Nick Daicos shook off a tag to collect 34 disposals, while veteran duo Steele Sidebottom (28 disposals) and Scott Pendlebury (26 disposals) turned back the clock.
After a disappointing Opening Round loss to the Giants, Craig McRae’s men have been unbeaten since. However, facing one of the toughest away trips in the AFL, the odds are stacked against them.
Lions vs Magpies AFL R6 team news
Don’t expect the Brisbane Lions to make many changes after they got past the Dogs unscathed. However, exciting forward Kai Lohmann is pushing to return from an ankle injury, which would likely push substitute Will McLachlan out of the side.
Collingwood are also unlikely to make many changes, unless midfielder Jordan De Goey can recover from a lower-leg issue. Dan Houston and Lachie Schultz remain at least a week away.
Brisbane vs Collingwood prediction
This looks set to be a cracking contest. However, the Lions are undefeated and have won 10 of their last 11 matches at the Gabba. If they can ensure they don’t have another slow start, back them to get home by less than 40 points at $2.15 with major sports betting sites.
With six goals in the last two weeks, Zac Bailey has been in excellent form for the Lions. The 25-year-old has moved away from the midfield in 2025, becoming one of the AFL’s leading small forwards. Get on Bailey to continue his good form with two or more goals at $2.15 with BetOnline.
With Collingwood lacking numbers in the midfield, Scott Pendlebury has made the move back into the middle this season — and to great effect. The 37-year-old has collected over 25 disposals in each of the last three weeks, with only Nick Daicos attending more centre bounces. With De Goey set to remain on the sidelines for another week, back Pendlebury for 25 or more touches at $2.70 with BetOnline.
