In a major test for both sides, all eyes will focus on the Gabba when the stuttering Brisbane Lions host the undefeated Collingwood Magpies in a huge Thursday night contest to open round four of the 2023 AFL season.
Brisbane were most disappointing in round three against the previously struggling Bulldogs. This continues their recent trend of being poor on the road and dominant at home. Premierships cannot be won on such results, and the Lions must uncover the psychological factors in play if they hope to secure a top-four finish.

Brisbane won the hitouts 44 to 35, narrowly lost the clearance battle, but produced a paltry 7.11 from 48 inside 50s, including a mere two goals to half-time. Gone was the free-flowing ball movement of their round two win over the Demons, leaving fans to scratch their heads at the hopeless inconsistency on display.
Only inaccurate goalkicking cost Collingwood another emphatic win in round three, but they had enough class and composure to close out a win over Richmond despite posting 8.15. The Pies led from the eighth minute of the match and never looked seriously threatened. They did, however, emerge from the win with some injury concerns.
Darcy Cameron went down with a knee complaint that will see him sidelined for six to eight weeks, and Collingwood’s ruck stocks taper off very quickly in his absence. The 2022 departure of Brodie Grundy might come back to haunt the Pies, who otherwise look like premiership contenders at this early stage of the year.
Key matchup: Charlie Cameron v Nick Daicos

Collingwood’s Nick Daicos was expected to come back to the field somewhat in 2023 after a breakout year that helped propel his side to a productive finals campaign. This has not occurred and the younger Daicos is averaging 33.3 disposals, 19.3 kicks, 5.3 marks, and 534.7 metres gained per game. These numbers have Daicos installed as the second favourite for the Brownlow Medal at this early stage. The 20-year-old plays with freedom to roam the ground from the half-back line and shapes as a headache matchup for any opponent.
Brisbane forward Charlie Cameron had a quiet night against the Dogs, kicking just 1.1 and gathering eight disposals. He brought some defensive pressure with five tackles, but the overall performance was well below par. Like many forwards, Cameron is a confidence player who can go missing on occasions when the ball eludes him. At his best he is a busy forward who can win possession, kick goals, and set up teammates in scoring positions. The Lions will need Cameron to inject himself into the contest if they hope to test the Pies.
Brisbane v Collingwood AFL Rd 4 betting strategy
Collingwood go into this game as narrow favourites with the early line set at a negligible 3.5 points. With uncertainties hanging over both sides, this is a tricky game to assess. If Brisbane can play like the side that ran over the Demons, they are good enough to win, but nobody likes backing hot and cold teams. And only time will tell how Collingwood perform without a genuine ruckman. If both teams kick truly, this could be a high-scoring affair, so we are leaning toward the overs in that department.

For those looking for additional value, we suggest combining over 177.5 points into Lachie Neale to get 25 or more disposals, into Nick Daicos to get 25 or more disposals, into Jordan De Goey anytime goalkicker. This combo is paying $3.94 on Marantelli Bet.
Over 177.5 / Neale 25+ disposals / N. Daicos 25+ disposals / De Goey goal
