Brisbane Broncos defeat Roosters in 50-point NRL statement

Brisbane Broncos defeat Roosters

The Brisbane Broncos have kicked off their 2025 NRL season in emphatic fashion, thrashing the Sydney Roosters 50-14 at Allianz Stadium.

It marks a historic night for the Broncos, who, under new coach Michael Maguire, piled on 50 points against the Roosters for the first time in club history.

The night began with promise for the Roosters, as young gun Robert Toia sliced through Brisbane’s defence to set up Dominic Young for a try, with top online bookmakers offering $10 odds on him as the first tryscorer.

However, their joy was short-lived.

Brisbane struck back quickly, with Gehamat Shibasaki crossing under the posts after slick lead-up work from Ben Hunt and Jesse Arthars.

From there, it was all Broncos.

Brisbane’s relentless attack was spearheaded by fullback Reece Walsh and veteran halfback Adam Reynolds, who orchestrated plays with precision.

Payne Haas and Patrick Carrigan dominated in the middle, ensuring the Broncos controlled possession and territory.

Haas, in particular, was unstoppable, producing a monstrous first half that included nine runs for 87 metres, four tackle busts, two offloads, and a try assist.

By halftime, the Broncos had established a commanding 20-4 lead, aided by further tries from Jack Gosiewski and Cory Paix.

The Roosters’ woes deepened when vice-captain Victor Radley was forced off with a head knock, deemed a category-one concussion that will see him sidelined for at least 11 days.

Brisbane Broncos v Sydney Roosters NRL Round 1 Highlights

The second half saw the Broncos ramp up the pressure, with Selwyn Cobbo completing a hat-trick, including a breathtaking team try that featured multiple kicks and fast hands through the backline.

Ben Hunt, making his return to Brisbane, also got in on the action, finishing off a stunning razzle-dazzle play that showcased the Broncos’ attacking prowess.

After the game, coach Michael Maguire praised his side’s work ethic, saying, “Just the energy, the effort that the players put in for each other… that was probably something from what I felt was a real highlight of the game. They just want to work for each other, and that says a lot about the connection of the players.”

Captain Adam Reynolds also lauded his new halves partner, Ben Hunt, stating, “He’s worked extremely hard on his craft, and that combination down the left edge there is only going to get better. We’ve only had about a month together, if that, so it’s exciting.”

The Roosters did manage a late consolation try through Young, but the result was already beyond doubt.

Coach Trent Robinson now faces a tough road ahead, with his side needing to bounce back quickly ahead of next week’s clash against Penrith.

With significant personnel losses in the offseason and ongoing injury concerns, the Roosters are staring down what could be a difficult season.

Meanwhile, Brisbane fans have plenty to celebrate, with the Maguire era starting in spectacular fashion.

Their immediate challenge now is the travel disruption caused by Cyclone Alfred.

With Brisbane Airport closed, the Broncos were granted special clearance to take a charter flight to Toowoomba before embarking on a two-hour bus ride back to Red Hill.

Reynolds acknowledged the impact of the situation, saying, “It’s about getting home as soon as possible, being with our loved ones, and making sure that we’re all okay. We’re thinking of everyone that’s going to be affected through the cyclone.”

The Broncos’ dominant display has already cemented them as early premiership contenders with Neds Bookmaker shifting their odds from $8 to $6, while the Roosters will need to regroup quickly to avoid further struggles in the opening rounds.
