Bills v Dolphins game preview
The Dolphins and the Bills will both be looking to go 2-0 when they clash in Miami this Friday (AEST) to kick off Week 2 of the 2024 NFL season.
The Bills got their season off to a good start last Monday, beating the Cardinals by six points in a high-scoring clash at home. Trailing by 14 points late in the second quarter, the Bills rallied and scored the next 21 points unanswered. Led by quarterback Josh Allen, who scored two touchdowns and threw for two more, Buffalo scored 34 points and held off a late Arizona comeback.
After losing plenty of key players on both sides of the ball in the off-season, there were concerns around how the Sean McDermott’s team would go in 2024. However, their offense stood up, with running back James Cook (101 total yards) and rookie wide receiver Keon Coleman (four receptions, 56 yards) leading the way.
Their defense still conceded 28 points against the Cardinals, who struggled to score in 2023. Facing the explosive Dolphins offense, it is no surprise to see them as underdogs at +115 with Marantelli Bet.
Starting cornerback Taron Johnson (forearm) and backup defensive tackle Dawuane Smoot (toe) have been ruled out this week, while reserve running back Ty Johnson (knee) is questionable.
The Dolphins were also successful in Week 1, defeating the Jaguars by three points in Miami. After conceding the first 14 points of the game, the Dolphins took over and scored 20 of the next 23 points, with kicker Jason Sanders slotting the winning 52-yard field goal as time ran out.
Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s 338 passing yards led the league for Week 1, with receiver duo Tyreek Hill (seven receptions, 130 yards) and Jaylen Waddle (five receptions, 109 yards) starring.
Expect another year of dynamic plays from Mike McDaniels’ explosive offense, which led the NFL in total yards gained last season. Their defense also looked much improved, which was an area of concern in 2023.
Miami running backs De’Von Achane (ankle) and Raheem Mostert (chest) are both questionable this week and will be game-time decisions.
Bills v Dolphins betting strategy
After an explosive showing on offense from the Dolphins to start the season, it is tough to see how an undermanned Bills defense will be able to stop them. Miami are a much more balanced team, and with the lack of travel in a short turnaround, they should be good enough to cover the line of -2 points at $1.90 with top NFL bookmakers.
Josh Allen showed in Week 1 that in short yardage situations, he will be the main ball-carrier. At his size, with the use of an extra blocker, he scored 18 rushing touchdowns last season, while he has four in his last two games. At $1.80 with leading sports betting sites, Allen is a safe bet to score.
With doubts around the fitness of the Dolphins’ running backs and the loss of Bills starting corner Taron Johnson, expect Miami to have a more receiver-friendly gameplan. WR2 Jaylen Waddle is an excellent candidate for increased action after collecting 109 yards from just five targets against the Jags. Known for his big plays, back Waddle to collect over 75 receiving yards at $2.40 with leading online bookies.
