Ben Hunt eyeing Broncos return after Dragons exit
Ben Hunt is interested in returning to the Brisbane Broncos, with the halfback opening up about his future prospects and recent exit from the St George Illawarra Dragons in an interview on Sunday.
“Brisbane will always have a soft spot for me,” he said.
“I’ve been involved since I was 12 years old, so they’ve put a lot of work into me.
“If I had the opportunity to finish there, it would be pretty special.”
Hunt parted ways with the Dragons last week despite having one year remaining on his contract, with relations between the two breaking down following a tough post-season review.
He is now without a contract for the 2025 NRL season, although several clubs are rumoured to be interested in signing the Queenslander.
“It dragged out a bit, so it’s good that it’s over now,” Hunt said of his exit from the club.
“A bit of weight is off the shoulders, and we can move on.
“I thought I gave my best to the Dragons for a long time.
“I played some of my best footy there.
“I competed hard, I really helped try to build the club and I think I can hold my head up with what I did there.”
Hunt played 147 games for the Dragons, scoring 39 tries since joining the club in 2018, before which he spent nine seasons with the Broncos.
While he would like to return to his Brisbane roots, Hunt’s main priority is ending his career with some silverware.
“I’ll try and go somewhere you can win a competition,” he said.
“It’s pretty obvious I’m getting to the back end of my career, and I’ve only got a few years left so I’d really like that opportunity to go to a team that I think can win one.”
The 34-year-old has a chance to add the Pacific Cup to his resume this Sunday, with the Kangaroos taking on Tonga for the title.
Rugby league betting sites are confident that the green and gold will prevail, paying odds of just $1.10 for Australia to claim their second title.
