Australia vs South Africa match preview
South Africa continue their white-ball tour of Australia this Tuesday as the two sides begin their three-match ODI series in Cairns.
The home side secured a 2-1 victory in the T20 series last week but will now need to move away from their reckless hitting style in the longer format.
Neither side has played an ODI match since the Champions Trophy in March, where both teams bowed out in the semifinal stage.
However, with the home advantage, top online bookmakers have the Aussies as strong favourites at $1.42, while the Proteas are at $2.80.
Australia team news
Glenn Maxwell and Tim David are not in the squad for the ODI games, so there will be a couple of changes to the side featured in the T20s.
Marnus Labuschagne is expected to step in, while the final spot in the middle order will go to either Alex Carey or Cooper Connolly.
Australia’s predicted XI:
- Travis Head
- Mitch Marsh (c)
- Marnus Labuschagne
- Cameron Green
- Josh Inglis (wk)
- Alex Carey
- Aaron Hardie
- Ben Dwarshuis
- Nathan Ellis
- Josh Hazlewood
- Adam Zampa
South Africa team news
South Africa welcome back captain Temba Bavuma for this series, and he is tipped to bat at the top of the order.
With the likes of David Miller, Wiaan Mulder, Marco Jansen and Heinrich Klaasen all missing from the squad, the Proteas will have a new-look middle order featuring the likes of Dewald Brevis, Matthew Breetzke and Tristan Stubbs.
Meanwhile, left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj has also been added to the squad and is tipped to be the main spin option.
South Africa’s predicted XI:
- Temba Bavuma (c)
- Ryan Rickleton (wk)
- Rassie van der Dussen
- Aiden Markram
- Matthew Breetzke
- Dewald Brevis
- Tristan Stubbs
- Kagiso Rabada
- Lungi Ngidi
- Kwena Maphaka
- Keshav Maharaj
Australia vs South Africa predictions
With both sides playing little ODI cricket in recent times, this is a hard match to predict. However, coming off their T20 series triumph and holding the home advantage, it is hard to look past the Aussies in this clash.
With the ball, keep an eye on Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa, who is the most experienced ODI player in the squad. Expect him to bowl straight after the powerplay and try to frustrate the South African batsmen. He has taken multiple wickets in each of his last three ODI matches, and at $4 with major cricket betting sites, he offers great value to be Australia’s top wicket-taker.
For South Africa, the most dangerous batsman is Temba Bavuma. He has scored fifties in each of his last three ODI innings and thrives against both pace and spin. While the captain won’t blow the Aussies away with big hitting ability, he is a reliable accumulator and a great play to bring up 50 once again at $3.25 with Bet365.
