Apprentice Thompson continues winning run

Apprentice Aiden Thompson continued his great association with in-form The Kingdom and maintained his terrific run of overall success at Eagle Farm.

Thompson rode his first metropolitan Saturday winner on The Kingdom at Eagle Farm on January 18 and has now added another 15 city wins to his record.

Despite a slow early pace The Kingdom ($1.50) was too strong for Mannway Machine ($13) winning by three quarters of a length in the Events @BRC Handicap (1800m).

The Kingdom has now won his past four starts and earned himself a short break before being brought back for the winter carnival.

Stable foreman Les Kelly Jnr said The Kingdom was a promising stayer and would be up to the winter carnival.

“We think he will be a horse for races like the Tattersall’s Cup and the Ipswich Cup,” he said.

Kelly, the son of trainer Les Kelly, said Thompson had a bright future.

“Dad picked him out after he won for us at the Gold Coast last year and we have stuck with him since then,” Kelly said.

Thompson said he had little worry with The Kingdom in the run.

“There was no pace but you often get that in small fields. He is pretty promising,” he said.

“Things have been going well and I am getting the support from some good stables.”
