Angst a sentimental race for trainer

Noel Mayfield-Smith’s stable is named for the horse who put him on the map and more than two decades after Angst’s death, the trainer will have a runner in the race that honours the filly.

Unequivocal represents Angst Lodge in Saturday’s 1400m-Group Three race for mares and her trainer is keen to see her do well.

“I’ve always wanted to have a runner in the race and Unequivocal is my first,” Mayfield-Smith said.

“It would be delightful if we could win it.”

Angst raced 10 times for seven wins including all four legs of the 1993 Princess Series for fillies culminating in the Group One Flight Stakes which would be her last race.

She died prematurely when she developed complications after a routine surgery to remove bone chips.

Unequivocal’s record is three wins and five placings in a 23-start career interrupted by injury.

“She will get a good track tomorrow which will suit her,” Mayfield-Smith said.

“She has also won over 1400 metres so she has a few things in her favour.

“I’d like to think she would go well enough and we could look at a couple of races in Melbourne over the spring.

Unequivocal is a $14 chance in the Angst Stakes with Dixie Blossoms and Extensible the TAB’s $3.60 favourites.Mayfield-Smith is also looking at Melbourne for Group One-winning sprinter Famous Seamus.

“He will go to the Moonga Stakes on Saturday week,” he said.

The Group Three Moonga Stakes is also the target for Country Championshp winner Clearly Innocent and dual Group Two winner Takedown.
