Amphitrite beats stablemates in stakes win

Amphitrite wins the Edward Manifold Stakes.
Amphitrite has led home a Darren Weir-trained trifecta in the Group Two Edward Manifold Stakes.

Talented filly Amphitrite has taken the step to stakes racing in her stride, leading in a Darren Weir stable trifecta in the Edward Manifold Stakes at Flemington.

With Craig Williams aboard, Amphitrite was able to get into the three-wide running line with cover in Saturday’s 1600m Group Two race for fillies before having clear running from the top of the straight.

Chasing her third straight win this preparation after a Sale maiden and midweek Flemington victory, the well-backed $3.20 favourite sprinted to the front at the 200m and went on to beat Krone ($5) by 1-3/4-lengths.

Former New Zealand filly Verry Elleegant ($4.20), in her first start for Weir, was another three-quarters of a length away third in her Australian debut.

“She’s been going along really well and she’s just taken the right progression after each start,” Weir said of Amphitrite.

‘She got a lovely run today and it was a terrific win.

“All three ran well.”

Weir said it had been the plan for Krone to back-up in next Saturday’s Group One Thousand Guineas at Caulfield while immediately after the race he said he was unsure whether Amphitrite would also head that way.

“I’m not sure about the winner but Krone definitely heads that way, that was the plan all along,” Weir said.

“She (Amphitrite) has probably got to go there, I suppose.

“It might just all come too quick and she’s got to back-up in seven days.

“I thought she looked great today in the yard, so she might be able to back up.

“The filly that ran third is probably more an Oaks sort of horse but I was really pleased with the way she attacked the line.”

Williams said it was a dominant win from Amphitrite who he has been aboard for all three wins.

“She’s got more in store the way she won today,” Williams said.
