Wimbledon 2024: Alcaraz v Medvedev preview

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz takes on No.5 seed Daniil Medvedev in what should be a fascinating semi-final at Wimbledon this Friday.

The pair have met six times before, with Alcaraz leading the head-to-head ledger 4-2.

Their rivalry has been intriguing so far. Alcaraz has won their last two meetings in straight sets — earlier this year in Indian Wells, and at the year-end finals in 2023.

Before that, Medvedev prevailed in four sets at the US Open.

This time last year, however, they met at this stage of Wimbledon. The result was a one-sided 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 victory for the Spaniard.

Alcaraz is having a strong year. He claimed his third Grand Slam in Paris, winning the French Open with back-to-back five-setters against Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev.

Earlier in the season, he picked up a second title at Indian Wells, before a forearm injury led to some time away from the game.

In London, the No.3 seed has been in fine form. He defeated qualifier Mark Lajal and Aleksandar Vukic in straight sets before going the distance with No.29 seed Frances Tiafoe.

Most recently, he has navigated four-set matches against both Ugo Humbert and Tommy Paul to book his place in another Wimbledon semi-final.

Medvedev has had a solid season without being spectacular. The Russian is 28-9 for the year and has won no titles, but he has made runs to the finals of the Australian Open and Indian Wells Masters.

This tournament, the former world No.1 has brought his best.

He meandered his way through week one with wins over Aleksandar Kovacevic, Alexandre Muller and Jan-Lennard Struff. Earlier this week, he was fortunate to have a straightforward win in the round of 16 when Grigor Dimitrov retired injured after eight games.

His biggest splash, however, came in the quarter-finals, when he ousted top seed Jannik Sinners — the bookmakers’ favourite to win this year — in five sets.

Wimbledon 2024: Alcaraz v Medvedev predictions

This match has five sets written all over it.

The pair’s head-to-head count does not lend to this conclusion, but what we know of Medvedev does. He is a player who solves problems, with a high tennis IQ that will always bring fresh strategies.

We saw that against Sinner last match. Medvedev had lost five in a row against the Italian and was a huge underdog at tennis bookies, yet he prevailed. He did the same at the 2021 US Open against Novak Djokovic.

The fact that both players have had an extra day off ahead of this match plays in Medvedev’s favour too. He was already rested thanks to Dimitrov’s retirement; now, he will come into the semi-finals ready and able to go the distance.

In saying this, do not expect Medvedev to win this match.

Alcaraz has an exceptional five-set record (12-1). He will be tested by the crafty Medvedev, but just as he did against Djokovic last year, the Spaniard will find a way to get past him in five.
