AFL umpire in middle of betting scandal still not charged
Victorian Police are yet to lay charges against the AFL umpire at the centre of a betting scandal, despite it coming to light almost a year ago.
The legal representative for the umpire Michael Pell, has revealed he is anxiously awaiting the investigation’s conclusion, despite the investigation entering its 11 month.
On Tuesday, Victoria Police reiterated that their examination into the matter remains “active.” and emphasised the gravity of the allegations and the necessity for a meticulous probe.
Last year, Pell faced a dramatic arrest on November 14 on suspicions of leaking confidential Brownlow Medal votes. Remarkably, detectives haven’t interviewed him at all this year.
In her first public comment on the matter, Pell’s attorney, Jordana Fayman, told News Limited that the “prolonged nature” of the investigation had taken its toll on Pell and his family.
“Given all that has transpired over the last 10 months, he looks forward to the investigation finally being complete,” she said.
Following his arrest, Pell resigned from his position at the AFL due to mental health concerns, though the league did not conclude any official findings against him.
Furthermore, the continued police scrutiny has stymied Pell’s career prospects, as he’s faced multiple job rejections.
Regarding the situation, Incoming AFL CEO Andrew Dillon clarified last year that the integrity of the best and fairest award remains uncompromised by this betting issue.
Last year’s Brownlow Medal was awarded to Carlton captain Patrick Cripps, who is scheduled to present this year’s accolade at the Crown event on Monday evening.
Cripps’ win was shrouded in controversy after he escaped suspension on appeal late in the season for a rough play charge, where Brisbane’s Callum Ah Chee ended up knocked out.
Collingwood young gun Nick Daicos is the favourite for this year’s Brownlow Medal, ahead of Western Bulldogs sensation Marcus Bontempelli.
