AFL Trade News: Eagles land Baker, Owies as Houston deal stalls

Australian Football League (AFL)

West Coast have signed Liam Baker from Richmond and Matthew Owies from Carlton in what is arguably the biggest deal of the AFL trade period so far.

Confirmed on Tuesday morning, the move ends an eight-day drought on player trades.

The Eagles also receive picks 12 and 73 from the Blues as part of the three-way agreement.

In return, Carlton gain picks 3, 63 and 68 from West Coast, while the Tigers get pick 14 for Baker.

It means Richmond now have three selections in the top 25 for this year’s national draft, with deals for wantaway stars Shai Bolton and Daniel Rioli still to be finalised.

Even so, Adem Yze’s men remain rank outsiders in 2025 AFL Premiership betting after claiming the wooden spoon this year.

Bet365 is paying $151 for the Tigers to win the flag, with West Coast not far ahead on $101 following another disappointing campaign.

Carlton, meanwhile, hold the fifth line of outright betting at $10.

Houston deal bombs as Port Adelaide hold out

In other AFL trade news, a three-club deal that would have sent Dan Houston from Port Adelaide to Collingwood has fallen flat.

With five players and seven picks on the table, the Power were set to receive Joe Richards from the Magpies as well as Jack Lukosius and Rory Atkins from the Gold Coast Suns.

The deal would also have given Port Adelaide a first-round pick and two second-round picks, yet the club is seeking better compensation.

Houston has become a key figure on the Power’s half-back line, and his absence through suspension was keenly felt during the team’s failed finals campaign.

Online bookmakers have Port Adelaide at $17 to win the premiership in 2025, which puts them in the lower half of the market.
