AFL Rd 4 betting preview & free tips | Gather Round 2024
The 2024 AFL Premiership season continues this week with the annual Gather Round as all 18 teams play in South Australia. Below are our free AFL betting tips and previews for round four.
Adelaide Crows vs Melbourne Demons
Thursday, April 4 – 7:10pm ACST – Adelaide Oval
After an embarrassing four-goal effort against the Dockers last Friday, the pressure is rising on the winless Adelaide Crows. Facing the Melbourne Demons, who return to Adelaide after their narrow win against Port Adelaide last Saturday, the Crows come in as clear underdogs with online bookmakers.
Melbourne -6.5
Brisbane Lions vs North Melbourne Kangaroos
Friday, April 5 – 4:40pm ACST – Norwood Oval
With a 0-3 record and issues off the field, 2024 has not gone to plan for the Brisbane Lions so far. Facing the also-winless Kangaroos, they come in as major favourites against the worst defensive side in the AFL. With injuries decimating North Melbourne’s key position stocks, expect the Lions to return to form with a statement performance.
Brisbane -35.5
Port Adelaide Power vs Essendon Bombers
Friday, April 5 – 7:40pm ACST – Adelaide Oval
Port Adelaide’s perfect start to the season was ended last Saturday in a seven-point loss to the Demons. Now they welcome the dangerous Essendon Bombers, who are fresh off an upset win over the Saints. Both sides enter this clash at 2-1, and while the Power are strong favourites, this match should be closer than expected.
Essendon +22.5
West Coast Eagles vs Sydney Swans
Saturday, April 6 – 1pm ACST – Adelaide Hills
After their five-point loss to the Tigers on Easter Sunday, expect the Sydney Swans to get back to winning ways as they welcome the last-placed West Coast. After posting a record 205 points against the Eagles last year, don’t expect this clash to be any less one-sided as the highest-scoring team in the AFL faces the lowest-scoring side.
Sydney -54.5
Fremantle Dockers vs Carlton Blues
Saturday, April 6 – 3:50pm ACST – Adelaide Oval
With both sides still undefeated, the Fremantle Dockers face the Blues in what is arguably the most exciting clash of the round. In their biggest test yet, Freo’s AFL-leading defence faces the firepower of the Carlton twin towers in Charlie Curnow and Harry McKay. The Blues enter this match as slight favourites, although they have never won at Adelaide Oval.
Fremantle +6.5
Western Bulldogs vs Geelong Cats
Saturday, April 6 – 7:40pm ACST – Adelaide Oval
The undefeated Geelong Cats face their toughest test yet against the inconsistent Western Bulldogs. The Bulldogs at their best are unstoppable; however, there is a stark gap between their best and worst, and that makes them unpredictable. Having won five of the past six games between the sides, the Cats should have the edge as they return to the scene of their win over the Crows two weeks ago.
Geelong -1.5
Gold Coast Suns vs GWS Giants
Sunday, April 7 – 1pm ACST – Adelaide Hills
Sitting on top of the ladder, the GWS Giants have plunged into outright premiership favouritism with AFL bookmakers. Facing the Suns with both sides coming off the bye last weekend, the Giants are expected to continue their strong start having won 11 of the past 12 games between the sides. While an upset isn’t impossible, a 48-point loss to the Dogs before the bye raises concerns for Damien Hardwick’s men.
GWS -16.5
Richmond Tigers vs St Kilda Saints
Sunday, April 7 – 3:50pm ACST – Norwood Oval
After their outstanding upset win over the Swans last Sunday, the Richmond Tigers have been dealt a blow with key forwards Tom Lynch and Noah Balta picking up injuries. AFL betting sites have made them heavy underdogs for their clash with the Saints, who are fresh off a disappointing loss to the Bombers. As Richmond’s high-pressure footy has returned and St Kilda’s kicking remains a problem, an upset isn’t out of the question.
Richmond +22.5
Collingwood Magpies vs Hawthorn Hawks
Sunday, April 7 – 5:40pm ACST – Adelaide Oval
The reigning premiers finally secured their first win of the season last Thursday, beating the Lions on the road. Coming in off a 10-day break, Collingwood hold a clear advantage over the Hawks, who continued their winless start in a loss to the Cats on Monday. The Magpies are on an eight-match winning streak at Adelaide Oval and should be too strong for a Hawthorn outfit with plenty of concerns on both sides of the ball.
Collingwood -24.5
