AFL Rd 10 preview, betting predictions & free tips
The fight for ladder position in the 2024 AFL Premiership season continues with another exciting slate of matches this week, headlined by a clash between premiership contenders Sydney and Carlton on Friday night. Below are our free AFL betting tips for all nine matches of round 10.
Gold Coast Suns v Geelong Cats
Thursday, May 16 – 7pm ACST – TIO Stadium
After starting the season 7-0, the Geelong Cats have lost two matches in a row to fellow top-eight sides. Heading up to Darwin, they are favourites with top AFL bookmakers to bounce back against the Gold Coast Suns. Damien Hardwick’s men were 68-point winners last round in the NT, but having alternated wins and losses for the past six weeks, it would be a statement if they managed to upset the Cats.
Geelong -3.5
Sydney Swans v Carlton Blues
Friday, May 17 – 7:40pm AEST – SCG
Sitting a game and percentage clear at the top of the ladder, the Sydney Swans have emerged as clear premiership favourites at $4.50 with top online bookmakers. Unbeaten at home this season, they welcome the dangerous Carlton Blues, who come off a thrilling one-point victory over Melbourne last Thursday. A head-to-head battle between Brownlow Medal favourites Isaac Heeney and Patrick Cripps awaits, while the Carlton twin towers face a tough test against the best defence in the AFL.
Sydney -12.5
Collingwood Magpies v Adelaide Crows
Saturday, May 18 – 1:45pm AEST – MCG
Unbeaten in their past six matches, the Collingwood Magpies have put their slow start behind them and worked their way back into the top eight. Similarly, the Adelaide Crows have also found form recently, losing just one of their past five matches. The Magpies have won the past eight games between these sides, but as the last three encounters have all been decided by less than a goal, this should be closer than expected.
Adelaide +21.5
GWS Giants v Western Bulldogs
Saturday, May 18 – 4:35pm AEST – ENGIE Stadium
Despite losing three of their past four matches and dropping out of the top four, the GWS Giants enter as favourites with top bookmakers for their clash with the Western Bulldogs at home. Wildly inconsistent, the Doggies sit in 11th spot while boasting the third-highest percentage in the AFL. An exciting rivalry in recent years, this matchup is a chance for the Giants to bounce back.
Western Bulldogs +18.5
Brisbane Lions v Richmond Tigers
Saturday, May 18 – 7:30pm AEST – Gabba
With just 26 players available for selection this week, the struggles look set to continue for the injury-hit Richmond Tigers as they travel up to the Gabba to face the Brisbane Lions. Despite their disappointing season so far, Chris Fagan’s charges have a great opportunity to gain some percentage with a big win over the 17th-placed side.
Brisbane -43.5
St Kilda Saints v Fremantle Dockers
Saturday, May 18 – 7:30pm AEST – Marvel Stadium
The pressure is rising on Ross Lyon and the St Kilda Saints, who sit three games outside the top eight after losing four of their last five matches. However, even with their poor record, they enter as slight betting favourites against the Fremantle Dockers. As these two sides have struggled offensively this season, expect an arm-wrestle in what is a must-win clash for both teams.
St Kilda -4.5
Essendon Bombers v North Melbourne Kangaroos
Sunday, May 19 – 1:10pm AEST – Marvel Stadium
Sitting in third position on the ladder, the Essendon Bombers have been the surprise of the season. They enter Sunday’s clash with North Melbourne as the biggest betting favourites of the round, with a great opportunity to improve on their poor percentage. The Kangaroos are yet to show any resistance in a match this season, so expect the high-flying Bombers to extend their five-match unbeaten run.
Essendon -47.5
Port Adelaide Power v Hawthorn Hawks
Sunday, May 19 – 3:20pm AEST – Adelaide Oval
Port Adelaide pulled off their biggest win of the season last Friday as they beat Geelong on the road. Back at Adelaide Oval, they face a tricky clash against the Hawthorn Hawks, whose victory over St Kilda last round made it three wins in four games. While the Power have been up and down over the past five weeks, they should get the job done at home; however, don’t expect the improving Hawks to go down without a fight.
Hawthorn +32.5
West Coast Eagles v Melbourne Demons
Sunday, May 19 – 6:20pm AEST – Optus Stadium
After showing some form with consecutive wins, the West Coast Eagles have now crashed back down to earth with three straight losses — including a 66-point thumping against Collingwood last Sunday. Despite playing at home, they enter as clear underdogs against the Melbourne Demons. Looking to bounce back from their loss to the Blues, this is a must-win clash for Craig Goodwin’s side in order to hold onto a position inside the top four.
Melbourne -29.5
