AFL R17 review: North Melbourne, St Kilda shine as upsets abound
The unpredictable nature of the 2024 AFL Premiership season was on full display in round 17, with several of the top teams dropping points as the race for finals spots heats up.
It all kicked off with a blockbuster at the MCG on Friday night as Essendon came back from a sloppy first quarter to beat Collingwood by 12 points.
That much-needed win for the Dons has caused Neds to slash their premiership odds from $34 to $17, while the Pies have blown out from $7 to $15.
The drama continued at Marvel Stadium on Saturday afternoon as North Melbourne stunned the Gold Coast Suns, getting home by four points.
In a back-and-forth affair, it was the Kangaroos and their young guns who stood up when the pressure was on.
That night, the GWS Giants made a statement with their 12-point victory over Carlton at ENGIE Stadium.
The Blues have held steady at $4 for the flag, however, while GWS have shortened slightly from $15 into $12.
The rest of Saturday’s games were blowouts; Port Adelaide smashed the Western Bulldogs by 48 points, Geelong downed Hawthorn by 51, and Fremantle finished with the same margin against Richmond.
It was a similar story in the first game on Sunday as Melbourne beat West Coast by 54 points at the MCG, but the same cannot be said of St Kilda’s clash with Sydney over at Marvel Stadium.
It looked like normal service had resumed for the Swans when they extended their lead to 30 points midway through the third term, but the Saints proceeded to kick eight of the last 10 goals to pinch a famous two-point win.
Although Sydney have lost their last two games, online bookmakers still have them as outright premiership favourites at $3.25.
Brisbane and Adelaide wrapped up the round at the Gabba, with the Lions shrugging off a late charge from the Crows to win by 11 points.
After five wins on the trot, Chris Fagan’s men now hold the third line of premiership betting at $8.
