Kicking off the second week of finals with a blockbuster, the Melbourne Demons host the Carlton Blues at a sold-out MCG this Friday night. Coming off some tough contested matches in week one, both sides have been hit by injuries and suspensions.
The Demons lost Angus Brayshaw to concussion early in the match last week, while Jacob van Rooyen has been suspended for a game due to striking. As a result, ruckman Brodie Grundy appears likely to return this weekend.
Carlton lost a player to concussion last week as well, with key forward Harry McKay unavailable this Friday night. The Blues are also headed to the tribunal to appeal the two-match suspension imposed on Jack Martin for striking Sydney’s Nick Blakey. If that play is unsuccessful, Jesse Motlop – the sub last week – is the likely replacement for Martin, while Jack Silvagni is expected to step in for McKay.
The Demons showed enough class last weekend to win against the Pies, with late missed opportunities proving the difference. Expect another close game, but Melbourne should be too good.

Following a big win over St Kilda, the GWS Giants head across to South Australia to face the Port Adelaide Power on Saturday night.
After being comfortably beaten last weekend, the Power will need to improve greatly to win against this in-form Giants team. Having beaten GWS by 51 points just four weeks ago, Port will feel they have the advantage coming into this matchup.
Port Adelaide defenders Trent McKenzie and Dylan Williams both suffered injuries last weekend but are considered a chance to play this Saturday. The Power could also be boosted by the return of key forward Charlie Dixon, who is set to play his first match since round 20.
The Giants are expected to welcome back midfielder Stephen Coniglio, who was a late omission last weekend.
With their dominant win over the Saints last weekend, the Giants pose a real threat of an upset. GWS have a stack of match-winners, so there is real value in backing the underdogs here.
