AFL: Collingwood demolish Port Adelaide in 91-point MCG rout
Collingwood rediscovered their ruthless edge with a dominant 91-point demolition of Port Adelaide at the MCG on Saturday night.
After a sluggish Opening Round loss to Greater Western Sydney, the Magpies responded emphatically, piling on 12 second-half goals to run away with a resounding 21.10 (136) to 6.9 (45) victory.
Collingwood entered the clash as $1.62 favourites with AFL betting sites, and it was clear to see why.
Dan Houston and Tim Membrey made immediate impacts in their first home game as Magpies, with Membrey kicking Collingwood’s first three goals of the match, while Houston gathered 27 disposals and five tackles in a standout midfield display against his former club.
The Pies’ forward trio of Membrey, Dan McStay, and Brody Mihocek combined for 10 goals, making Port’s struggles in attack all the more glaring.
Port Adelaide found themselves overwhelmed from the outset, unable to match the Magpies’ intensity and efficiency inside 50.
Port Adelaide’s new-look forward combination of Jack Lukosius and Mitch Georgiades managed just one goal between them, highlighting the void left by retired spearhead Charlie Dixon.
Connor Rozee (35 disposals) and Ollie Wines (34) battled hard in midfield, but their efforts were drowned out by Collingwood’s relentless pressure and superior firepower.
After taking a 34-point lead into halftime, the Magpies went into overdrive in the second half, kicking 12 goals to two in a relentless display that left the Power reeling.
The 91-point margin marked the heaviest defeat of Ken Hinkley’s coaching tenure, exposing serious concerns for Port’s forward structure and ability to withstand high-pressure teams.
Collingwood’s response to last week’s disappointment was as ruthless as it was clinical, reaffirming their title credentials.
Following the win, Collingwood are now $11 premiership fancies with Neds.
Meanwhile, Port face a major test of their resilience when they face Richmond — fresh off a shock win in Round 1 — at Adelaide Oval next Saturday.
