A-League Round 11 betting tips, best odds & top value bets
The unpredictable A-League season rolls on and round 11 is highlighted by a vital clash between top four sides Central Coast and Adelaide United. A tightly condensed ladder means big swings are inevitable and teams like Sydney FC, the Brisbane Roar, and the Newcastle Jets will be looking to advance their positions with favourable results.
Melbourne Victory v Brisbane Roar
Friday, January 6 — 7:45pm AEDT
AAMI Park, Melbourne
Melbourne Victory’s ($1.91) woes continued in round 10 of the A-League when they were rolled by the Mariners, and Tony Popovic’s boys have now lost three out of their last four games. The Victory are facing the prospect of a lost season. They sit 11th on the ladder after entering the new season as one of the favourites to lift the trophy. Pressure is mounting on all sides, and it remains to be seen if the playing group can put the off-field drama behind them and play some decent football. They are fortunate to be facing the Roar at this stage who have struggled to find the back of the net.
Brisbane ($3.75) emerged from round 10 with a 1-1 draw with Macarthur but will feel somewhat cheated by the result. They took the lead in the 28th minute courtesy of a Carlo Armiento finish, only to concede the equaliser deep in the second half. Surprisingly, Brisbane are unbeaten on the road this season, having drawn away with the Wanderers and Western United, and beaten the Jets. They will go in with some confidence that another point at least can be salvaged from this fixture. We are expecting a low scoring affair and will be backing the unders.
Under 2.5 total goals
Perth Glory v Western Sydney Wanderers
Friday, January 6 — 10:30pm AEDT
Macedonia Park, Perth
The Glory ($3.40) endured a tough away assignment in round 10 and had no answers for the superior attacking pressure of Adelaide United going down 2-0. Perth have been away for seven of their opening 10 matches and will be happy to get back onto home soil for this match-up. They are undefeated at Macedonia Park in this campaign with a win over Western United and a draw with Wellington.
After scoring a mere eight goals in their opening nine matches, the Wanderers ($2.10) poured it on in round 10 with a 4-0 bonanza against Macarthur. This result keeps the boys from the west in second spot on the ladder and adds some respectability to their goal difference statistic. The Wanderers have displayed good form away from home, losing only once on the road this season. With the Wanderers’ goal scoring floodgates finally open, we expect this to game to go over the 2.5 line.
Over 2.5 total goals
Sydney FC v Wellington Phoenix
Saturday, January 7 — 5:00pm AEDT
Allianz Stadium, Sydney
After successive poor losses, Sydney FC ($1.83) rebounded with a solid 0-2 win away to the Jets in round 10. Adam Le Fondre got the party started in the 37th minute, and Robert Mak closed the show with a finish in the 41st. The win saw Sydney jump into sixth position and they will be looking to add some consistency to their hot and cold season thus far. This home game presents a golden opportunity to string two wins together, a feat that has eluded them across the opening rounds.
Wellington ($3.60) were a touch unlucky at their most recent outing against the high-flying Melbourne City. The Phoenix hit the front in the 16th minute courtesy of David Ball, only to concede the equaliser two minutes later. They were then punished by a Jamie Maclaren penalty in the 51st, and again by the same man in the 96th minute of the game. Wellington have only been beaten once on the road this season and will be confident of landing an away heist here. They have scored in every game this season, and we can expect them to continue with their attacking mindset in the immediate future.
Over 2.5 total goals
Central Coast Mariners v Adelaide United
Saturday, January 7 — 5:00 pm AEDT
Allianz Stadium, Sydney
The Mariners ($2.10) kept their good form rolling in round 10 and have now won three out of their last four, the only loss being a narrow 1-0 defeat to the table-topping City outfit. This purple patch sees the Central Coast move to third on the ladder with the competition’s second-best goal difference. Scoring has not been an issue for the Mariners, and they average exactly two goals per game at this point in their campaign. With the wind at their back, they should provide stiff competition for all opponents in the coming rounds.
Adelaide ($3.00) are expected to struggle in this fixture, although their away form is respectable enough with one win, three draws, and two losses to show for their efforts on the road. They hold onto fourth spot on the ladder just a single point adrift of their opponents here. That said, we are taken with the Mariners’ superior consistency and are obliged to tip them straight up here. This promises to be a high-level game with both sides expected to produce their best.
Central Coast to win
Melbourne City v Western United
Saturday, January 7 — 7:45 pm AEDT
AAMI Park, Melbourne
Melbourne City ($1.57) continued to impress in round 10 against the Phoenix and have dropped a single game this season. They are deserved betting sites favourites to continue with their early dominance and add silverware to the trophy cabinet. City’s superiority extends to both ends of the pitch. They are scoring more than two goals per game and boast the competition’s equal tightest defence. The players appear set in their roles and comfortable to roll out the Rado Vidosic game plan. It is hard to find a chink in the Melbourne City armour at this stage of the season.
Western United ($5.00) have worked hard in recent weeks to tighten their defensive structures and have conceded a single goal across three hard fought games. This correction was desperately required as John Aloisi’s boys had been responsible for the competition’s flimsiest defence in the seven games prior. There is still much to be done to correct their early defeats and progress beyond the bottom half of the ladder. This match-up will give us and the Western United squad a clear indication of the effort required to match the all-conquering City outfit.
Melbourne City to win
Macarthur FC v Newcastle Jets
Sunday, January 8 — 3:00 pm AEDT
Campbelltown Stadium, Campbelltown
After putting a three-goal spanking on Sydney FC in round nine, Macarthur ($2.10) were humiliated by the Wanderers 4-0 in round 10. So which version of Macarthur can we expect to show up against the Jets? Due to the lacklustre form of the fellow middle-ranked sides, Dwight Yorke’s boys remain in fifth position, despite conceding 15 goals and scoring only 13. That is the nature of the ladder at this stage of the season. Betting on wildly inconsistent teams is never fun, and this match-up could easily produce a blow-out either way.
The Jets ($3.00) remain draw-less after a round 10 loss to Sydney FC, continuing their recent temperamental form. Their home record is slightly better than their away efforts, but there is no telling how the Jets might perform on any given day. They tend to lose by big margins on their bad days, so this might turn into a goal-fest. Following this line of thinking, the overs might be the best play in this unpredictable fixture.
Over 2.5 goals
Perth Glory v Brisbane Roar
Tuesday, January 10 — 10:30 pm AEDT
Macedonia Park, Park
Both sides are on the quick back-up for this game, which should suit the Glory ($2.60) who have the benefit of remaining at home. A solid showing against the Wanderers will see them playing with plenty of confidence against the higher placed Roar. Hot weather conditions are predicted, so it may turn into a sloppy affair decided by fitness levels and minimising time spent working in defence.
The Roar ($2.50) will be playing their second game on the road in four days and might be feeling the strain of all the miles in the second half of this match-up. Their form on the road is solid enough, but this may be a bridge too far and we are happy to tip against them based on the rigours of the assignment. Both teams are low-scoring sides, so a straight up bet might be the wisest option rather than trying to predict goal scoring totals.
