A-League 2022/23 Round 3 betting tips & predictions – Oct 21-23
Round three of the A-League season presents some compelling games of football – none more than the fiercely fought Melbourne derby, which pits premiership favourites City and Victory in a blockbuster at AAMI Park. We have uncovered some strong tips across the six matches, so read on to find out who we think will prevail across the weekend.
Western United vs Macarthur FC
Friday, October 21 — 7:45pm AEDT
AAMI Park, Melbourne
Western United have made a slow start to the season and sit winless at the foot of the ladder. They managed to find the back of the net once against Sydney FC in round two, but leaky defence saw them concede one goal in the first half and two in the second. These frailties will need to be rectified before John Aloisi’s boys can present a serious challenge.
Macarthur FC impressed in round two with a tidy 2-0 win over Adelaide United. Coaches love clean sheets, especially when combined with attacking potency, and new boss Dwight Yorke must be loving his squad’s early-season output. There should be further upside to look forward to as Yorke moulds the team and rolls out his strategy.
We are happy to ride Macarthur here at the one-goal handicap, paying $1.80 at Marantelli Bet.
Macarthur FC +1
Western Sydney Wanderers vs Brisbane Roar
Saturday, October 22 — 5pm AEDT
CommBank Stadium, Parramatta
Wanderers sprung the biggest upset of round two when they accounted for the Victory in Melbourne. A single Tomislav Mrclea goal in the first half was enough to split a lively game that featured 10 yellow cards and plenty of spirit. Western Sydney are undefeated and sit second on the ladder, and they will be looking to keep the ball rolling with another victory over the winless Roar.
Brisbane have now gone 180 minutes without troubling the scorer while conceding two goals. They were not hopelessly outclassed by Melbourne City in round two but will need to quickly lift before the season slips away. This fixture might stretch them again and we expect another loss to enter their tally sheet.
Western Sydney Wanderers to win
Newcastle Jets vs Wellington Phoenix
Saturday, October 22 — 5pm AEDT
McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle
The Jets managed to scramble home against the Glory in round two thanks to a stoppage-time goal. They get another great chance to keep building against the Phoenix, and a win would place them in the top six with a game in hand.
Wellington’s consistent start to the year continued when they eked out another draw in round two against the Central Coast. The Phoenix managed to score twice against the Mariners, which must please coach Ufuk Talay, but they are now on the road, where their form has tended to wane in previous years.
Newcastle for the win is the strong tip, paying around $1.91 with most online bookmakers.
Newcastle Jets to win
Melbourne Victory vs Melbourne City
Saturday, October 22 — 7:45pm AEDT
AAMI Park, Melbourne
Victory fans were deflated by their side’s loss to Wanderers in round two. Nothing clicked for the Victory; attacking manoeuvres repeatedly broke down and the team incurred four yellow cards in the dying minutes as frustrations emerged. The performance contrasted with round one, when they looked calm and assured, and they will be keen to put up a more vigorous effort in this derby.
Table-topping Melbourne City travelled to Brisbane in round two and made short work of the Roar in another exciting performance. Jamie Maclaren struck twice in the first half and that was enough to steer his team home. They will face a sterner test here against cross-town rivals but will be confident that form and momentum are on their side.
We are tipping the Victory to bounce back here at nice odds with the best soccer betting sites.
Melbourne Victory to win
Sydney FC vs Adelaide United
Sunday, October 23 — 3pm AEDT
Allianz Stadium, Sydney
Sydney were far too good for Western United in round two and have now scored five goals across the opening two rounds. They have also conceded four, but fans love goals and are hardly drawn by 0-0 results. Import Joe Lolley found the back of the net last weekend, as did Robert Mak, and Adam Le Fondre converted from the spot in a comfortable 3-1 win.
Adelaide remain winless after two rounds having conceded three goals and scored just one. They played without great purpose against Macarthur and will need to find some attacking flair without delay. Pressure will start to mount on coach Carl Veart unless his squad can find some additional forward thrust.
Sydney FC to win
Central Coast Mariners vs Perth Glory
Sunday, October 23 — 5pm AEDT
Central Coast Stadium, Gosford
Central Coast returned from Wellington with a point after a seesawing battle that ended in a 2-2 stalemate. The Mariners are yet to open their winning account after their opening fixture was postponed due to poor weather, and they will be looking to grab the spoils at home against the struggling Glory.
Perth sit rooted to the bottom of the table after two winless opening rounds that have yielded a single goal. They look hard pressed to turn that around on the road and would be grateful to earn a draw from this fixture. Coach Ruben Zadkovich will be hopeful of improvement when the Glory get back on home turf.
