They were well and truly wrangled by the North Queensland Cowboys last week, conceding four unanswered tries before hitting back late with three in a row to add some respectability to the scoreline.
Canterbury-Bankstown might even have made a real game of it had Kerrod Holland, scorer of the home side’s first two tries, converted more than one of his three attempts on goal.
Yet the Dogs still hold eighth spot thanks to the woes of Parramatta, who copped an almighty flogging from the Roosters last Sunday.
Blake Ferguson grabbed a hat-trick in what was a dominant all-round display from Sydney.
They scored four tries in each half, six of which were converted by Michael Gordon, to run out 48-10 winners and fly into the top four.
The Roosters are now perched two points behind Melbourne Storm and Cronulla Sharks, who rallied from 14-0 down against the Cowboys on Thursday to take top spot.
It was Sydney who triumphed in a 28-24 thriller when these bitter rivals met at Allianz Stadium in round two.

Under 40.5 total points
These two may have played out a high-scoring belter earlier in the year, but that has hardly been the norm for either side this season. Only three Roosters games have produced more than 40 points in total, while the Bulldogs have featured in only one other besides their loss at the Allianz. Sydney are in good form and both sides have plenty of scoring threats, but the under option seems a pretty solid bet in this case.
Blake Ferguson anytime tryscorer
It is hard to pick a standout from Sydney’s rout of the Eels last weekend. Daniel Tupou impressed with a brace, Joseph Manu scored for the second game running and Michael Gordon converted eight of 10 goal attempts. But it was Ferguson who shone brightest, crossing three times to grind Parramatta into the dirt. He has now scored in four of eight starts this season and looks in fine fettle with State of Origin approaching.
Roosters to win by 1-12 points
While Sydney are playing some very good footy, the scale of the result against Parramatta stands out as an exception to the rule. Four of their seven wins have come by six points or fewer, with only the Eels (38 points), the Knights (18 points) and the Rabbitohs (14 points) suffering greater margins against the Tricolour. It was a tight one when the Roosters and Doggies last met, so there is every chance it will be again.
