Tuesday, 24th April, 7:25 pm AEDT, 2018, MCG, Watch on Seven Network and on Fox Footy.
Richmond and Melbourne will do battle under the bright lights of the MCG on ANZAC eve in what is fast-becoming one of the biggest home and away matches of the AFL season.
More than 85,000 fans are expected to pack out the home of football in a game that has never failed to live up to the hype thus far.
After an insipid showing last week, most football pundits are giving Melbourne very little chance of victory, but we know that in the emotional blockbuster that honours Australia’s fallen troops, anything is possible.
It’s round five and Simon Goodwin is still without his co-Captain Jack Viney and key position swingman Tom McDonald. These are truly significant injuries that have taken a toll on the squad.
The Tigers are at the top of their game. Everything seems to be going smoothly at Punt Road in their premiership defence. After last week’s 93 point thrashing of the Brisbane Lions, Richmond is in fine form coming into this match.
Richmond will be without premiership star, Daniel Rioli, who is still recovering his foot, Jack Graham through suspension and mystery surrounds Josh Caddy and Nick Vlastuin, who have been ruled out with undisclosed injuries.
Let’s take a look at the tips for Tuesday’s clash.
Melbourne Demons vs Richmond Tigers Round 5 – Player Special tips
The big full forward is back in vogue and Jesse Hogan is set to continue the trend. Richmond play a very team-orientated style in its back half of the ground. If Jesse can utilise his running capabilities and kick straight, he could damage the Tigers on the counter attack. It’s been a great week for the forwards and we expect Hogan to mirror his peer’s performances with a bag of his own.
Dustin Martin 2+ Goals @ $1.65 with William Hill
Dusty played very well last week and kicked an outrageous six goals. Spending more time up forward has been beneficial for both Martin and the Tigers and we expect the same plan for this match. Melbourne has no match-up for Dustin Martin. There really isn’t a team in the league that can counter the ability of the best player in the game. Expect a big performance from Dustin this week.
Melbourne Demons vs Richmond Tigers Round 5 – First To tips
First Team to 5 Goals
Richmond @ $1.53 with Sportsbet
A practically full-strength Richmond has the capacity to rip the Demons apart. The Tigers start off games very well and will continue along this path in this one. As the better team, we expect Richmond to follow through with its fast-scoring style. The odds are surprisingly high for what we imagine will happen fairly quickly in the match.
First team to 3 behinds
Richmond will be kicking the early goals and contrary to this, we think Melbourne will be kicking the behinds. As we have seen in the past few weeks, the Demons are poor in front of goal and they sit fourteenth in the league for goal accuracy. The $2.14 is the higher payout and we think it could be a winner.
Melbourne Demons vs Richmond Tigers Round 5 – Total scoring tips
Total match points over 180 @ $2.07 with CrownBet
With nearly every team redeeming themselves in some way this round, Melbourne will not fade out of the match like they did last week against the Hawks. The Demons only kicked one goal in the final three quarters of the match and attracted questions about their ability to play finals football this year. We expect a high-scoring match and hot contest from both sides. The odds being over two dollars make this bet the perfect leg for your multi.
Melbourne vs. Richmond match predictions
Match Result: Richmond to win @ $1.47 with Ladbrokes
Line Betting: Richmond -13.5 @ $1.92 with Ladbrokes
The matches between these teams have being close in the past, but we think the times have changed and Richmond will be out for blood against the poor Demons. Jack Viney will once again be a huge omission and the Demons will find it hard to win the midfield battle.
