HOW good are the Adelaide Strikers?
Jason Gillespie’s men sit top of the Big Bash League table after an impressive win over the Melbourne Stars on Tuesday.
Alex Carey and Travis Head starred with unbeaten half-centuries, but it was the bowlers who stole the show once again.
Every one of Adelaide’s five-pronged attack took a wicket while going for fewer than nine runs an over.
It is that kind of all-round contribution that has pundits calling the Strikers bowling unit the best in the division.
Will it uphold up against one of the world’s most successful T20 cricket franchises?
There are signs the Perth Scorchers may be in for a tough run home.
Andrew Tye, David Willey and Jhye Richardson were sorely missed on Thursday as the defending champions fell short against the Sydney Thunder.
Cameron Bancroft and Hilton Cartwright almost got them home with red-inked fifties, but a target of 176 proved three runs too many for the Scorchers.
That was only their second loss of the season, so it may be a little early to start ringing alarm bells.
Strikers vs. Scorchers top runscorer betting
Alex Carey – +260 at Sportsbet
Rumour has it that Adelaide’s emerging keeper-bat was overlooked for Test selection due to a perceived lack of expertise with the willow.
He has answered those allegations with 222 runs at 56.00, not to mention a terrific 139 in his last Sheffield Shield game for South Australia.
With Head away on ODI duty and Jake Weatherald battling for form, Carey is the obvious choice in the Strikers top order.
Ashton Turner – +450 at Sportsbet
We may revise this pick if Shaun Marsh is cleared to play, but such is Turner’s form in BBL07 that some have called for his inclusion in Australia’s ODI squad.
The already-undermanned Scorchers will be most thankful the national selectors looked elsewhere.
Turner leads Perth’s batting charts with 199 runs in seven knocks and looks the most likely to pull out the big middle-order runs.
Strikers vs. Scorchers top wicket-taker odds
Rashid Khan – +210 at Sportsbet
Adelaide’s Afghani sensation has taken the Big Bash by storm with his inscrutable wrist spin, hefty hitting and fiery on-field energy.
The teenage tweaker’s 11 wickets have come at a league-best average of 11.36 and an economy rate of 5.20.
Those world-class numbers make Rashid the standout option in the BBL’s most effective attack.
Matthew Kelly – +500 at Sportsbet
Most will go for Mitchell Johnson ($3.50), but Kelly showed plenty on debut at Spotless Stadium.
Lumped with the unenviable task of filling AJ Tye’s shoes, the 23-year-old seamer from Claremont exhibited great variety and consistent execution to finish the night with 1/32.
There is more than enough there to suggest Kelly could upstage his more experienced bowling partners at very good odds.
Strikers vs. Scorchers match prediction
Will ‘Son of Swampy’ play?
That could be the key to this result.
The elder of the Marsh brothers is recovering from a quad strain suffered in the lead-up to his heroic display for Australia in the Sydney Test.
His notorious Twenty20 chops could single-handedly turn the odds in Perth’s favour.
Cricket Australia are keeping a close eye on Marsh’s progress, so it might be that Saturday’s game comes a weekend too soon for the Scorchers.
If that is the case, everything points to a Strikers side that has plunged into +300 favouritism in BBL title betting at Sportsbet.
Head is a loss, but Carey’s form is excellent, Colin Ingram is looking dangerous and the bowlers have hardly missed a beat all season.
With Perth missing so many of their biggest talents, it looks like Adelaide’s game to lose.
