THE Adelaide Strikers could not have asked for a better start to BBL07.
Travis Head and company survived a late scare from the Sydney Sixers on Thursday night to go top of the table with two wins from two.
It is an especially impressive start when you consider they lost Brad Hodge, Kane Richardson, Adil Rashid and a host of experienced heads in the off season.
Alex Carey has had no trouble stepping into Tim Ludeman’s shoes as first-choice wicketkeeper, hitting scores of 44 and 83 not out at the top of the order.
Credit must also go to the recruiters who sounded out Peter Siddle and Rashid Khan, both of whom have already made a big impact with the ball.
The Brisbane Heat look set for another strong campaign after winning two of their first three games.
They were taken to the wire by the Sydney Thunder in a rain-affected match on Wednesday, but Alex Ross and the returning Chris Lynn got them home with a ball to spare.
Pakistani leg-spinner Shadab Khan impressed again with 2/17 in that game to take his season record to six wickets at 14.16.
The problem for the Heat is that the rest of their bowlers have managed only six scalps between them at a combined average of 64.17.
That issue was exposed last Saturday when the Melbourne Renegades chased down 132 with seven wickets and more than two overs in hand.
Brendon McCullum odds and bet specials

Brendon McCullum started the Big Bash League season with a typically brisk 40 against the Melbourne Stars.
He has added only 10 runs in two knocks since then.
It should worry the rest of the BBL that Brisbane are 2-1 when McCullum and Lynn are yet to hit their stride.
You cannot keep players of that calibre down for long.
Lynn’s return complicates the market a little, but the opening slot gives ‘Baz’ that fraction more opportunity to unleash some fireworks on NYE.
Strikers vs. Heat match predictions
- Strikers to win – +105 at Neds
- Travis Head top batsman – +320 at Sportsbet
- Rashid Khan top bowler – +275 at Ladbrokes
All the money seems to be headed towards the Heat.
That is understandable now the ‘Bash Brothers’ are reunited.
But can Brisbane put all their eggs in that basket?
Even a score of 200-plus might not be enough if their bowlers continue to struggle for wickets.
On the other hand, the Strikers boast one of the BBL’s form batsmen and a bowling unit that stacks up against the very best.
The value is with Adelaide to ring in the New Year as league leaders.
