7:10pm AEDT – Saturday, January 7, 2017 – Etihad Stadium, Melbourne

LESS than a week after they clashed in front of 70,000 at the MCG, the Renegades and the Stars meet again in a derby date that could shape each side’s season.

It was the red half who saluted on a rainy New Year’s Day, winning by seven runs in a match that was shortened to 18 overs.

Cameron White led the way with 64 not out before Brad Hogg showed his everlasting value with three wickets at a cost of only 22 runs.

They did that without Dwayne Bravo, who will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on his injured hamstring.

But the Renegades bowling stocks will receive a huge boost this weekend with the likely inclusion of James Pattinson.

His much-anticipated Big Bash return was delayed by a minor hamstring issue, but Renegades coach Andrew McDonald said on Wednesday that the Victorian paceman was on target for the derby.

“James Pattinson had a hit-out yesterday, Peter Siddle as well,” McDonald said.

“So we feel as though we might have a few more pieces of the puzzle for this game.

“We’ll assess (Pattinson) and see how he’s pulled up from yesterday, but we’re pretty confident he’ll be available for Saturday’s derby, which is a massive inclusion for us.”

Peter Siddle hasn’t played since hurting his back during the first Test against South Africa in November.

Although he won’t be ready for a little while yet, McDonald said his old Sheffield Shield comrade was a real chance to feature at some point in BBL06.

“He’s getting back into some work – he’s probably a little bit further away than James with where he’s at,” he said.

“It’ll be a week-by-week thing with ‘Sidds’ but we hope he may be able to take some part in the back-end of the tournament which will be a massive inclusion come that time if we are at the business end.”

The Stars could use a few inclusions of that ilk.

Title favourites in preseason, they are now in a precarious position with one win from their first three games.

They had the dubious honour this week of handing Sydney Thunder their first win of the season.

Eoin Morgan’s last-ball six may have sealed the deal, but much of the damage was done during the Melburnian side’s innings.

Despite a strong start that saw each of the top six reach double figures, the Stars could only muster 8/166 after losing the last four of those wickets for 17 runs.

Kevin Pietersen – the shining light at Spotless with 60 off 37 balls – reckons keeping calm is the key to turning things around.

“We have to get some wins under the belt,” the former England star said this week.

“I think we normally lose our first two so we’re at the same stage as we are every single season.

“But it’s not a place where we should be.

“We should have won the other night too (against the Renegades).

“The rain sort of messed us around there and we lost 11 runs, two overs and that put a bit of panic in.

“The team that panics first in T20 cricket loses and we panicked there and we panicked this evening.

“We need to put the panic away.”

How much are we looking forward to this?

Pattinson has had a horror run with injury, but he remains one of the best bowlers in the country when he is up and about.

His return is massive for the Renegades, especially with Bravo out of commission.

There is every chance the 27-year-old quick will be a little rusty after so much time away from top-flight cricket.

Then again, he could come out spitting fire and bowling hand grenades.

Renegades vs. Stars BBL match tips

This is about the time of season the Stars turn up in earnest.

But is this squad a bit stale now?

The likes of Ben Hilfenhaus and David Hussey look as though their time has passed, while James Faulkner isn’t the threat he once was with either bat or ball.

The less said about Glenn Maxwell, the better.

Then you have a Renegades outfit that has injected some real quality for BBL06.

But for Bravo’s injury leaving them short staffed in the last-ball loss to Perth Scorchers, they might well be three and zero right now.

The home side will get a big boost from Pattinson’s return, while the Stars will be fired up after recent failures.

It’s a tight one, but the value is with a Renegades outfit that looks ready to challenge for silverware.
