Sunday, 6th May, 4.40 pm AEDT, 2018, Gabba, Watch on the Fox Footy Network.
The Brisbane Lions will be in with a sniff when they host the Collingwood Magpies at the Gabba this Sunday.
If there’s any game this round that could result in an upset, we think it may be this one.
Brisbane will get an injection of experience as veteran recruit Luke Hodge returns to the squad. Several others including Rohan Bewick and Ben Keays have been called upon to tackle the Pies.
Collingwood has made several changes leading into the match with a handful of stars returning to the field. The list of inclusions reads Darcy Moore, Travis Varcoe, Ben Crocker and Taylor Adams.
Darcy Moore is confirmed to play his 50th career game in the forward half, but that doesn’t mean he won’t swing back at times during the game. Taylor Adams has also been put straight into the guts in his first game back.
Brisbane has made an interesting decision ahead of the match by naming reality TV star Matt Eagles. The big key position player won his way on to an AFL list when he won The Recruit in 2016. This is quite significant because it will be the first time a player has entered the system in this exotic way.
Can Brisbane get its first win of the season or will it suffer a seventh straight loss? Let’s take a look at what we think will unfold on Sunday.
Brisbane Lions vs. Collingwood Magpies Round 7 – First to Tips
First to 3 Goals
Collingwood @ $1.54 with Sportsbet
For an early payout to get your blood pumping in the opening quarter, we think this is the tip for you. With all the returning stars to fill the field for the Pies, we could see them pile on a few early goals to get the engine running. Darcy Moore will be a fair chance to feature in this early wave of goals. Brisbane’s young defence will have to be switched on from the first bounce if they are going to stop the Magpies’ early attack.
First to 6 Behinds
Football had been very strange to watch form the stands these last few rounds across the whole competition. How are these professional athletes missing so many goals? Collingwood is one of the teams that has suffered from this contagious disease of poor goal kicking and we think they could pay out on this punt. The Lions will not have as many opportunities to kick behinds as the ball will be in Collingwood possession for most of the match.
Brisbane Lions vs. Collingwood Magpies Round 7 – Total Points Tips
Brisbane Lions 80.5 Over/Under
Under @ $1.49 with CrownBet
The Lions have been going very well defensively for a side that is on the bottom of the ladder. The only problem coming out of Queensland is scoring. Brisbane has scored the lowest total out of all the sides in the AFL with a measly average of only 8.8 goals per game. Averaging 63 points per game is not high enough for the Lions to get 80 plus against a fairly strong Magpie defence.
Collingwood Magpies 90.5 Over/Under
Over @ $1.78 with CrownBet
The bubble is ready to burst at the Holden Centre from the excitement surrounding the Magpies right now. Even after a 40 point loss against the Tigers, the chance of succeeding is what pushes the players and fans to keep doing the best they can. A big victory is what the Pies need leading into another big match with Geelong in round 8. Scoring 90 points would really get the confidence up for the month to come. Collinwood could do some damage if they keep playing well.
Brisbane Lions vs. Collingwood Magpies Round 7 – Footy Freaks Tips
This week’s Footy Freaks special form Ladbrokes is for the big American to kick a bag and Collingwood win. It was very evident last week that Mason Cox was marking the footy well. Taking an outstanding four contested marks, he got the Pies off to a good first half. Then the cowboy went missing. If Cox can stay in the game for the whole four quarters, the goals will come and so will the win for this Magpies.
Lions vs. Magpies Match Predictions
Match Result: Collingwood to win @ $1.34 with William Hill
Line Betting: Collingwood -20.5 @ $1.91 with William Hill
Nathan Buckley will want his team to perform at their best in the lead up to a tough month ahead. Chris Fagan would want the same from his men, but that doesn’t mean the Lions can win this round. Collingwood travel very well, beating the Lions at the Gabba in its last three trips north. Another big win to the Pies will make their chances of finals closer to reality.
