By Nathan Marotta
Two teams with plenty of history come together this Sunday at the MCG when the Hawthorn Hawks take on the Melbourne Demons.
The contest has drawn attention from punters and bookmakers alike in what is being dubbed the match of the round.
The clubs, which almost merged at the end of the 96 season, go head-to-head on what is being forecast as a windy day in Melbourne.
With Tom Mitchell now the Brownlow favourite paying $4.00 at Sportsbet, the Hawks have one of the best midfields in the comp. Melbourne also have plenty of quality players, including star ruckman Max Gawn who has once again taken his game to the next level.
The Demons would have been undefeated if not for a late miss that cost them the game in round one against Geelong. Other than that blemish, the Demons have been one of the best teams in 2018.
Hawthorn was unable to beat the reigning premiers, Richmond, last week. The loss of Shaun Burgoyne and James Sicily proved too significant as they lacked experience and class. James Sicily will return this week after a suspension for kneeing Cat skipper Joel Selwood. Sicily is one of the Hawks’ most important players now that he has reinvented his career in the back half of the ground.
Let’s continue now to the tips for the game of the round.
Hawthorn Hawks vs Melbourne Demons Round 4 – Any player to tips
Any Player to Score 5 Goals Yes/No
No @ $1.45 with Sportsbet
Both teams pride themselves on their diverse way of scoring and multiple gun forwards. The chances of an individual having a day out – considering the weather – is unlikely. It would be hard to kick five goals on a perfect day, we just can’t see it happening in Sunday’s clash.
Any Player has 40 touches Yes/No
Tom Mitchell is as good as anyone when it comes to locating the pill. Mitch just seems to be in the right spots at every contest. We can see him getting the 40 in this game. William Hill provides more value for this bet than what you would get with Sportsbet — an extra 50 cents worth.
Hawthorn Hawks vs Melbourne Demons Round 4 – Winning Margin tips
1-19 @ $4.40 with CrownBet
After taking the scalp of super team Geelong in round 2, the Hawks solidified themselves as finals hopefuls in 2018, but how will they go against the surging Dees? Melbourne is still without Jack Viney and Tom McDonald, both recovering from ankle injuries. The Hawks will likely grab the Demons by the horns and be a strong contender to win.
The Demons are fourth on the ladder and have won their last two games. That sounds good, but they beat Brisbane and North Melbourne, two teams that are destined for bottom four finishes this season. They will need to win this match in order to prove themselves worthy of a top four position on the ladder. Gawn playing at his best will likely push the Demons over the line, but not by much.
Hawthorn Hawks vs Melbourne Demons Round 4 – Both teams to score tips
Both Teams to Score 80+ Points Yes/No
Yes @ $1.68 with Ladbrokes
Hawthorn registered its lowest score of 2018 when it compiled 89 last week against the Tigers. They still average 102 points a game and the Demons average even more at 105. The game could have difficult conditions, but that won’t stop these teams from finding ways to score.
