By Nathan Marotta

Friday, 6th April, 2018, 7.50 pm AEST, MCG, Watch on Seven Network and on Fox Footy.

THE oldest rivalry in footy is back in 2018 as Carlton take on Collingwood in a do or die Friday night battle at the MCG.

Both clubs have started 2018 poorly and enter round 3 without a win, but a 0-2 start is viewed differently by football pundits.

At Carlton, two losses is forgivable for a team that is young and rebuilding, but at Collingwood two losses draws intense scrutiny for a team hoping to push for finals.

The Magpies once again suffered an honourable loss in Round 2 in what looked to be a winnable match against the premiership fancies, GWS. Compound that result with a disappointing showing in Round 1 and a tough month of football ahead and Nathan Buckley’s men could soon be looking down the barrel of fifth-consecutive season looking on from the sidelines come finals time.

Injuries to both sides form big and legitimate excuses for the lack of quality football from both of these clubs. Carlton may go another week without star ruckman Matthew Kreuzer, while the Magpies will add Darcy Moore to an injury list that includes half a dozen members of its best 22.

While there may not be as much on the line between these two bottom-four sides, you can rest assured that the intensity of the rivalry will see the game played at a hot pace.

Another cracking game between these traditional enemies provides punters many markets. Here are a few tips to get the blood pumping for Friday night.

Carlton Blues vs Collingwood Magpies Round 3 – Total Points Tips

Carlton Blues

Over/Under 80.5 points – Over @ Sportsbet

2018 has proven to be a high-scoring year so far. Carlton could easily find themselves kicking multiple goals from quick entries with its exciting midfield. Charlie Curnow and Matthew Wright have proven handy up forward, both leading the club with seven goals for the season to date. Nice weather and a leaky Collingwood backline give the Blues every chance of getting over 80 points.

Collingwood Magpies

Over/Under 91.5 points – Over @ Sportsbet

Collingwood is desperate for a healthy forward line. Injuries to most of its conventional stars leaves the selection team picking players with little experience, forcing them to play pivotal roles. The inclusion of Ben Reid and Mason Cox will take the pressure off younger players and with the weather looking sunny a taller forward line could come to the fore. No matter their injury worries, if Collingwood can’t score more than 91 points against the 17th-placed Blues with its season on the line, they never will.

Carlton Blues vs Collingwood Magpies Round 3 – To Get 25 + Disposals

Carlton Blues

Kade Simpson @ $1.45 with William Hill

Kade has started the season in red-hot form, averaging 32 touches across both opening rounds. With Collingwood not having a lockdown forward that can reduce the amount of times Simpson can find the footy, we think he can have another great game. As always, Kade will receive handballs and take the kick-outs, boosting the chances of collecting 25 touches.

Collingwood Magpies

Taylor Adams @ $1.35 with William Hill

Taylor has not started the season the way we all expected. The form from last year hasn’t been reached as of yet. Against a young Carlton line up, there isn’t going to be a better opportunity to do so. Adams being just as competitive as any footballer who has played the game, will be eager to make amends for his average start to the year. Watch him bounce back this week with a massive game.

Carlton Blues vs Collingwood Magpies Round 3 – Margin tips

Carlton Blues

1 – 24 @ $4.10 with Ladbrokes

The Blues have overcome the Pies in two of their last three matches. The Blues seemingly have the formula to beat Nathan Buckley’s men and if they find the form they showed in the pre-season and in the first half against Richmond in Round 1, Collingwood will find them tough to beat.

Collingwood Magpies

1 – 24 @ $3.10 with Ladbrokes

There are too many injuries for the Pies to handle this early in the year. They have announced the availability of Elliot, Fasolo and de Goey during the week, but also claimed that they may play VFL if they are not ready. Ultimately the club is in shambles, but as always the talent is there, it’s just about whether they can produce the goods when the siren goes to start the match. If the Magpies do win as the bookies suggest, it’s going to be in a close affair, under four goals.

Carlton vs. Collingwood Match Predictions

Both clubs hate to lose against one another, but one has to lose. The Pies will outlast the Blues in a close, high scoring match.
