TO say the start of the season hasn’t gone to plan for the Canterbury Bulldogs would be a gross understatement.

The Dogs have suffered back-to-back losses to start their 2018 campaign, leaking a combined 66 points in the process. For a team that is usually defensively stoic, this statistic is troubling.

While the method in which they win may not be ideal, Penrith is looking to record a third-straight win on Friday night. The Panthers have trailed in both of their matches to date against the Eels and the Bunnies respectively, but have found a way to overcome their opponents.

If the Panthers are to be considered the real deal in 2018 however, they will need to be switched on and ready to go from the opening whistle.

The Panthers look the goods on paper but the Wests have shown us so far in 2018 to expect the unexpected.

Bulldogs vs. Panthers players to watch

Josh Jackson – Josh Jackson was a shining light for the Dogs in their disappointing loss to the Roosters, scoring a try, leading the team in tackles and line breaks. The skipper will once again need to be at his very best if his team is to be competitive.

Waqa Blake – Fijian flyer Waqa Blake has been electric to start the NRL season, scoring three tries from the opening two matches. The hot start to the season has seen the star winger insert himself into the Dally M frame early in the piece. The try scoring machine is the must-watch player of this match.

Who wins – Bulldogs or Panthers?

Based on what has transpired so far in 2018 it is hard to go past Penrith. On both occasions the Panthers have stormed back to win after falling behind early, while the Dogs have been pummeled in their pair of games to date.

The Panthers will also have the psychological edge on their opponents. The visitors have not lost to the Dogs since early 2016 and won both matches last year by a combined total of 46 points.

We’re backing the Panthers to make it three wins on the trot to open their 2018 campaign.

Top tip: Panthers by 1-12 points (+200 at Sportsbet)
