A drought-breaking win over the West Coast at Subiaco has Melbourne knocking down the door of the top four.
The Demons looked done and dusted midway through the final term, but some late heroics from Cam Pedersen, Max Gawn and five-goal star Tom McDonald got them over the line in a 15.9.99 to 14.12.96 classic.
Yet the standout for Simon Goodwin’s men was co-captain Jack Viney, who finished with 38 disposals and a goal in an inspirational, all-action display.
Also influential were Bernie Vince, Jordan Lewis and Clayton Oliver, although the latter of that trio made headlines for all the wrong reasons when he collapsed theatrically under a shove from Eagles defender Will Schofield.
The Melbourne midfield will have to be on top form again to thwart a Sydney Swans outfit still reeling from last Friday’s rollercoaster ride.
Having led for most of the match, John Longmire’s men were left stunned as Essendon slammed home seven unanswered goals either side of the last break to take a 19-point lead into the final minutes.
A few blinks of the eye later, Gary Rohan was stroking home the winning goal after the siren.
It was the most incredible outcome of an unbelievable round of footy, and one the Sydney players celebrated with a surreal blend of ecstasy, relief and confusion.
Josh Kennedy was outstanding once more with 36 possessions, 16 of which were contested, while Isaac Heeney made a critical contribution with two goals alongside his 21 touches and nine tackles.
Although Rohan made the ultimate impact at the other end of the ground, it was his defensive efforts on the Essendon small forwards that helped the Swans to get on top in first half.
Might he reprise that role against the in-form Jeff Garlett?
The good news for Sydney is they have not lost to Melbourne since 2010.
First goalscorer selections
Christian Petracca – +1300 at Sportsbet
McDonald the elder (+750) booted five last week and Jack Watts (+1200) could be back in the mix, but Petracca is well worth a go at the prices quoted. The young Demon is enjoying a fine season and always looks a threat in the forward half.
Lance Franklin – +750 with Ladbrokes Odds Boost Extra
It is not often that Buddy goes goalless over 120 minutes, but that is what happened at the SCG last Friday night. Michael Hartley and the Bomber back line did a very solid job, yet Franklin still managed six attempts for six behinds. Expect him to address that with an early strike.
Disposal betting specials
Jordan Lewis to have 30 disposals – +100 at Sportsbet
With the exception of dirty days against Carlton in round two and Collingwood in round 12, Lewis has picked up 25 touches or more in every game he has played this season. He finished with 29 disposals last week and 31 the week prior, so the signs are good for the former Hawk.
Josh Kennedy 30 disposals + Sydney to win – +275 at Ladbrokes
This guy is immense for the Swans. He was head and shoulders above anyone else on the park in a tough midfield contest last week, especially when the ball was up for grabs. The AFL Disposals Double special at Ladbrokes.com.au is top value for anyone backing the Bloods.
Melbourne vs. Sydney match tip
Sydney Swans by 1-39 points – +140 at CrownBet
We have no confidence in the handicap lines after last week’s nonsense. The Dees could be a little tired after playing in Perth last Saturday, whereas the Swannies have had a full week to recover. That’s all that tilts it for us. If you reckon Melbourne will have the legs, the +140 Bet Blast match price at Ladbrokes is the way to go.
