MELBOURNE may still be the team to beat, but Brisbane are threatening to make it a two-horse race for the 2017 NRL Premiership title.

The Broncos have looked in fantastic touch over the past fortnight, smashing the Gold Coast 54-0 and then trouncing Cronulla.

The defending champions had no answer as Matt Gillett, Darius Boyd, Corey Oates and two-try hero Tautau Moga powered the Queensland club into the top two.

According to Ben Hunt, the Broncos are determined to snare second spot and the advantages that come with it.

“It definitely makes your finals run a lot easier if you finish in that top two,” he told reporters on Tuesday.

“I think every team aims for the top four and if you get there you want to be in that top two.

“It definitely makes your preparation and everything a lot easier so it will be good to finish there.”

Hunt is on his way to St George Illawarra next season, but the utility insisted it would be business as usual when the Dragons visited Lang Park on Friday night.

“I’m approaching it the same as I would approach any game,” he said.

“We’ve had one training session already and we trained really hard.

“I’m not doing anything different. I’m just going to go out and prepare as well as I can.”

St George might be wishing they could call on Hunt right away as they look to arrest an alarming slide.

Having started the season so brightly, the Red V are now ninth on the ladder and in desperate danger of losing touch with the top eight.

They grabbed a much-needed win over the Gold Coast last time out, but those horror losses to Newcastle and South Sydney may have left them with too much to do.

This could be a blood bath.

The Dragons are the kings of inconsistency, lurching from huge wins to meek defeats on a week-by-week basis.

How can a team lose to the Knights after smashing 52 points past Manly the previous round?

One common thread throughout their season is high-scoring games, so there is value in tipping the top side of the total points line.

St George could spring a shock – they have done so several times already in 2017 – but Brisbane are playing right on the edge of finals intensity right now.

With second place in sight, it would be an absolute stunner if they lost this one.

Parramatta gave the Broncos their wake-up call a few weeks back, so do not expect them to fall asleep here.

Brisbane play an attractive game that brings all positions into the attack, and that makes picking tryscorers a bit of a doozy.

Corey Oates is always a threat, but we reckon his size and speed could prove most damaging in the latter half of the game.
