PUNTERS have shown no interest in the Hobart Hurricanes in the lead-up to BBL07.
The men in purple are bottom of Big Bash outright betting at most online bookmakers, and they may drift even further after Sydney Thunder’s win on Tuesday night.
The Hurricanes lack the star power of other, more glamorous franchises, instead relying on the experienced heads of skipper George Bailey, veteran allrounder Dan Christian and wicketkeeper Matthew Wade.
It does not help that one of their biggest assets, Tim Paine, could miss the entire season due to the Ashes and the upcoming ODI and T20 series against England.
The first test for Hobart’s battlers is a Melbourne Renegades outfit that many expect to feature prominently at the business end of the campaign.
Andrew McDonald’s squad was riddled with injury and availability issues last term, but it could hardly be in better shape for week one.
Dwayne Bravo is fit and firing again, while new recruits Brad Hodge, Tim Ludeman and Kieron Pollard add a wealth of class and experience to an already talented list.
James Pattinson is still out injured, but the additions of Kane Richardson and Jack Wildermuth provide plenty of cover in the bowling department.
With so much talent to choose from, it is little wonder the Renegades have surged into +400 odds in Big Bash title betting at CrownBet.
Aaron Finch odds and specials
- To hit a six – -166.67 at William Hill
- To score 50 – +225 at Ladbrokes
- Top match batsman – +275 at Sportsbet
- To hit five or more sixes – +650 at William Hill
- Man of the match – +700 at Neds
There are plenty of people who don’t rate Aaron Finch, but his record in the shorter formats is too good to ignore.
The Renegades captain has blasted over 6200 runs in T20 cricket, which puts him on the verge of the top 10 all-time runscorers despite having played far fewer games than the other names at the upper end of that list.
Also encouraging is Finch’s improved form in the Sheffield Shield, where he has stroked three half-tons in five games for Victoria this season.
Expect him to come out all guns blazing against Hobart’s uninspiring bowling attack.
Hurricanes vs. Renegades match prediction
Despite the odds, the Hurricanes are not entirely without hope.
Bailey is still one of Australia’s best white-ball batsmen, while Christian was playing international cricket only a few months ago.
Then there is Ben McDermott, who smashed 122 in a record-breaking win over the Renegades last season.
The question is whether the more unassuming names in the squad can step up against such talented opposition.
The ‘Gades have depth and quality in every department, so it is hard to see them losing against the favourites for the wooden spoon.
